Pensacola Civitans announce new officers, accomplishments

The Pensacola Civitan Club recently installed new officers. They are Lawrence Powell, president; Frank Brown, president elect; Susan Wesler, treasurer; Cindy Barring-ton, secretary; Jim Smith, immediate past president; and Jesse Bobbitt, chaplain. New directors are Gil Chase, Kathy Cotton and Joyce Long-mire.

By the end of the 2007-08 Civitan year on Sept. 30, Pensacola Civitans had issued checks totaling more than $8,500 to local organizations, community projects and high school scholarship awards and recognition.

The following organizations received donations from the Civitan Club: Escambia Westgate School, Miracle League Ballpark, Alzheimer's Family Services, United Cerebral Palsy, ARC Gateway, Special Olympics, Camp Happy Sands, YouthBiz, New Horizons, Alfred-Washburn Center, SeaStars Aquatics, Sickle Cell Disease Association, National Leadership Forum at Harding University and the Civitan International Research Center.

In addition, club members donated materials and labor for wheelchair ramps, made repairs to existing ramps and installed steps and railings. They built 39 ramps this year, for a total of 1,004 feet. To date, Civitans have built 168 ramps in the Pensacola area. They also sponsor Jr. Civitan Clubs at Washington High, Pensacola High, Pace High School and Workman Middle School.

Pensacola Civitans sell Claxton Fruitcake in area stores in November and December and service candy boxes in area businesses to raise the funds that finance their projects.

WOMAN'S CLUB MEETS: The GFWC Escarosa Woman's Club hd its first meeting of the year with Fran Ausserer, president; Dana Fulford, first vice president; Peggy Orgussar, second vice president; Ellen Addison, third vice-president; Mabel Loesch, recording secretary; Vivian Cory, corresponding secretary; and Sally Currie, treasurer.

Member Joy Campbell, the state chairman for Sew Much Comfort, has won an Award of Merit from the National Military Family Association. Sew Much Comfort makes adaptive clothes for wounded military men and women.

ARTS GROUP HAS NEW OFFICERS: Lorene Lanza was recently elected president of the Gulf Breeze Arts, Inc. Other officers include Patricia Burney, vice president; Anita Williams, secretary; and Frances Hanson-Grow, treasurer.

WINNERS ANNOUNCED: The Vince Whibbs Memorial Match Play Golf Tournament was played Oct. 23 through Nov. 6 at the A.C. Read Golf Course. The results were: Janey Wiles, winner; Countess Guiles, runner-up; Vicki Ciancioso and Marge Teal, semi-finalists; Mary Barrow, consolation winner; Sugi Tunstall, consolation runner-up; Helen Andrews and June Jennings, consolation semi-finalists; JoAnn Kelly, lovable losers winner; and Norma Urquhart, lovable losers runner-up.

WINE TASTING SOCIAL: The Xi Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi began its social season with a wine tasting at the home of Les Brown. The sisters and their guests sampled a variety of Australian and New Zealand wines. Linda Fitzpatrick presented tasting tips and techniques to increase the tasting experience.

Members provided potluck hors d'oeurvres to compliment the wines. Other members attending were Marsha and Curt Bourn, Kathy and B.J. Bullard, Phyllis Clark, Mary and David Enfinger, Lucille and Bill Foley, Barbara and Bill Goggins, Doris and Merle Hawkins, Roberta and Ted Mueller and Norma and Frank Wilson.
